In 1905, the Qing dynasty government intended to build Beijing - Zhangjiakou railway so as to control Zhangjiakou, a vital point between Beijing and Inner Mongolia and a passage for businessmen.

1905年5月,京张铁路总局和工程局成立,以陈昭常为总办,詹天佑为会办兼总工程师,1906年詹天佑又升为总办兼总工程师。詹天佑的铁路生涯是从天津开始的。1888年,28岁的詹天佑在同学邝孙谋的推荐 下,到李鸿章设在天津的中国铁路公司任工程师。他接手的第一项工作,是该公司总办伍廷芳交办的——协助 英籍工程师金达负责修筑津塘铁路。在施工中,他亲临工地指挥,与工人一起工作,80天之内就完成了从塘沽到天津的铺轨工程。这年9月5日正式通车后,李鸿章勘验了全线工程,认为铁路“平稳坚实”。
In May 1905, Beijing - Zhangjiakou Railway Bureau and Engineering Bureau were set up with Chen Zhaochang as head and Zhan Tianyou the chief engineer. In 1906, Zhan was promoted to head and chief engineer. Zhan Tianyou began his life of railways in Tianjin. In the year 1888, with the recommendation of a former classmate Kuang Sunmou, the 28-year-old Zhan Tianyou became an engineer at China Railway Company in Tianjin. His first job was assigned by head of the company Wu Tingfang to assist the British engineer Kinder to build Tianjin - Tanggu railway. In the engineering work, he personally went to the site and worked with the workers. Within 80 days, he had completed the track-laying from Tangu to Tianjin. After the railway was put to traffic on September 5 in the same year, Li Hongzhang inspected the whole project, commenting the railway as "stable and firm". However, instead of praising and promoting Zhan Tianyou, he appointed Kinder as chief engineer.

1905年8月,京张铁路正式开工,紧张的勘探、选线工作开始了。詹天佑亲自 带学生和工人,背着标杆,经纬仪,日夜奔波在崎岖的山岭上。他还鼓舞 大家说:“京张铁路是我们用自己的人、自己的钱修建的第一条铁路,全世界的眼睛都在望着我们,必须成功!”“无论成功或失败,绝不是我们自己的成功和失败,而是我们国家的成功和失败!”詹天佑为了缩短工期,想出了“竖井开凿法”,为了火车上山,创造了“人”字形线路,这些方法都在现在起到了非常

大的作用
In August 1905, the construction of Beijing - Zhangjiakou railway officially began and so did the surveying and route-selection work. Together with students and workers, Zhan Tianyou spent days and nights in the mountain carrying measuring poles and transit. He encouraged them that "Beijing - Zhangjiakou railway is the first railway built by ourselves and with our own money. The eyes from around the world are watching. We must succeed." "Whether we succeed or fail, it is not simply to ourselves. It is the success or failure of our country." In order to shorten the time, Zhan Tianyou initiated the digging method of building a vertical well; in order to help the train to climb mountains, he invented "人" type track. All these methods have proved to be very useful now.

就这样,在詹天佑的带领下,原订6年完成的京张铁路,提前两年于1909年8月11日全线通车了,还节余二十八万两银子。京张铁路的胜利 完成,是中国人民的胜利,也是中国爱国知识分子爱国精神的充分体现。
Beijing - Zhangjiakou railway had been planned to be built in 6 years, but Zhan Tianyou finished the project 2 years earlier. On August 11, 1909, the railway was open for transportation and the total project saved 280,000 taels of silver. The successful completion of Beijing - Zhangjiakou railway is the success of the Chinese people and an excellent example of patriotism from Chinese intellectuals.
